What are Community Events?
Community websites and apps are a fantastic way to bring people together online. But what about when you want to get everyone together in the real world? That’s what Community Events are for.
At the heart of Community Events is a calendar. It lists the dates and times of events. But community events can be so much more. In this post, we look at the wide range of uses for Community Events and how they can be used across an online community.
How Community Events can be used
The way you use community events will be based on what you are looking to achieve with your community. Here are some headlines uses:
Still the most popular use of community events. Event calendars can be used to share times and details of real world events. Features like RSVP, maps and add to calendar all help make event tools useful for your community members
Selling tickets to events
Allows you to sell tickets to community members, directly from your online community.
Promoting virtual Events
More important than ever these days. Virtual events allow you to bring people together for a shared online experience, that doesn’t require meeting face to face. A common and compelling use of virtual events is to manage online learning sessions.
Encouraging event discussions
Say you have a real world event, like a workshop, or a film showing. What happens before and after that event? Event discussions can be used to extend the event experience. They give attendees the chance to get excited in the build up and share experience after the event has ended.
Advantages of Community Events on an App
At Zipline, we believe mobile apps are at the core of community experience for members. Events are a great example of why we believe communities should have a companion app. While Events can be run though a browser community, having events baked into a custom built app can be even better!
- Add event to calendar – With a community app, adding and managing events on your phone’s calendar is easy.
- Notifications – Want to be notified of an upcoming event? With an app, you can offer members device based notification reminders.
- Map and wallet – running a ticketed event? With a community app, you can add event tickets to the member’s phone wallet. Want to share a location – deep integration with maps makes things easy.

The Community Event Tools Zipline use
Zipline Custom Communities are built in WordPress, the leading web-based content management system in the world. One of the key advantages of WordPress is the ability to add plugins. Plugins are pieces of software that can enhance the overall experience of a website – either for the member or site owner.
To deliver events, we use a premium plugin called Event Calendar Pro. Events calendar pro offers an incredible range of features and functionality, all fundamental to a top tier events service. Key features include:
- Calendar – displayed in list, card of diary format
- Event creation – can be restricted to admins, or opened up to members
- Recurring events – Perfect for setting up schedules in advance
- Event details – including title, description, time/date, locations (including Google Map support), RSVP, comments and more.
- Virtual Events – past events have made this tool even more compelling! Virtual events allow you add Zoom sessions, YouTube live broadcasts and more to your event.
- Widgets – allowing you to show events anywhere on the platform
- Tickets – A sophisticated ticket selling tool, including multiple ticket types, allocation control, QR code check in and more
Good to know
Events is a bolt on feature for the Zipline Community Package. If you opt to add events, you will automatically have licensed access to the Events Calendar Ultimate Bundle. This has a standalone cost of $689 per year! And remember, with a Zipline Community, we set everything up for you, exactly how you need it to work. And you have access to events on your very own custom built iOS and Android app!
Zipline’s Enhanced Community Event Tools
The Event Calendar Pro plugin is an incredible foundation. And while it offers the ability to allow visitors to create events, it doesn’t have true community capabilities. This is delivered with Zipline’s own Enhanced Community Events Tools software. The Enhanced Community Events software works in concert with Event Calendar Pro, with a specific focus on adding community-focused features. Two key features to Enhance Events are:
You can set up your community platform so events can be associated to community groups. This gives each community-group its own event calendar, while still allowing all events to be seen from a central, shared calendar. Depending on how you wish to set up your community platform, Group Events can allow community group admins, moderators or even group members to create events for community-groups they are associated with.
Pre-event and Post-event
Designed to encourage conversation before and after an event. The tool attaches an activity feed to each event, so attendees can chat in the run up to the event. After the event, the event organiser is messaged, and encouraged to post an event follow-up – with the option to add text, pictures and video. Once they post the event follow-up, all the event attendees are messages/notified, drawing them back to the event page where they can engage in the shared content.
Event Tools can be a key part of an online community or social networks. Given the wide range of use cases, it’s important to consider how you want to use event tools and what features you want to offer your members.
